What did you do to my child? by Juanita Galea

What did you do to my child?
What did you do to his eyes?
Emerald green, they once had been.

At the front of the lines he bravely stood
Carrying our cloth above a branch
Hand on his heart he proudly sung for us.

Hands trembling he said a prayer
Not for the glory of God,
but for us back home.

Charlie boy, please return from war.
With your eyes emerald green, oh how they’d gleam.

Im ready to go, the last I’d heard him say
Kissed his mother goodbye, then walked to the bay.

What did you do to my child?
No emeralds to decorate his body
No eyes brightly glistening.
The symbols of his immortality— gone

His body littered with mortality.
What did you do to his eyes?
What did you do to my child?
